Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
