Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
