Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
